LOSS TO THE STATE
MILLION-POUND PROJECT (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Mar. 28. The Sydney Turf Club has no intention of resuming Victoria Park racecourse. but is negotiating for another site, said the State Premier, Mr W. J. McKell, in Parliament to-day. It is because efforts to obtain that assurance failed that Viscount Nuffield decided to Abandon plans to build a £1,000,000 car factory on the racecourse, which is his property, and transferred the work to a South Australian firm. Viscount Nuffield will not comment on Mr McKell’s statement. “ Viscount Nuffield can have the lot at the end of the two-year lease,” said the chairman of the Sydney Turf Club. He maintained that the club had made that perfectly clear when first interviewed by Viscount Nuffield’s representative.
The contract between Viscount Nuffield and Richards Industries, Ltd., Adelaide, is worth £500,000. As soon as the State Parliament met to-day. Mr V. H. Treatt, the Leader of the Opposition, gave notice of a censure motion against the Government because of its failure to carry through the necessary action to enable the establishment of a £1,000,000 British motor industry in Sydney and disregard for the industrial development and economic well-being of the State. Th? club is paying £12,000 a year rental for the site, for which Viscount Nuffield gave £205.000.
