TRAIN OBSTRUCTED
FOUR PEOPLE KILLED CALCUTTA, Feb. 13. Four people were killed and 14 injured when the police opened fire on workers who blocked the passage of a train at Kankinara, 22 miles from Calcutta. Four others were killed and 60 injured in rioting to-day. The police opened fire six times in Calcutta. The situation has improved in some parts of the city, but acts of, lawlessness are continuing at many points. The Government has banned meetings and processions throughout the city until the return of normal conditions, and warned that anyone barricading roads or attempting to hold up traffic would be liable to be fired on by troops or police. A London message states that the Government has not yet received a report from Mr Casey on the situation in Calcutta at present or of fbe total casualties, said the Under-secretary for India, Mr A. Henderson, in the House of Commons. Mr Casey had told the Government that the disturbance had reached a pitch at which it was impossible to restore and maintain order with the available eivil resources, and he accordingly had authorised the importation of , strong military forces. Lord Winterton asked: Is it not clear that one reason for these riots was the sentence imposed—some think a light sentence —on a former member of the Indian National Army, who betrayed 1,000,000 colleagues and who was the associate of murderers and torturers in the Japanese Army? ” Mr Henderson said he would give a more dtailed statement after a further report from Mr Casey.
