WAR BRIDES

TRAVELLING ON MONTEREY RESTRICTIONS IN SYDNEY (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 14. The ban prohibiting the New Zealand brides of American servicemen from going ashore from the Monterey in Sydney has been further relaxed to permit those who have no relatives here to obtain daily leave passes from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Girls with relatives, and whose applications have been approved by the American Red Cross, may stay ashore until Saturday morning. Actually a number of brides are ignoring the order, after finding that they have little trouble in getting off the ship. The ban on overnight leave for girls without relatives here is not regarded kindly by some of the girls concerned, who are keen on seeing Sydney night life. To-morrow 210 Sydney brides will go aboard and the instructions are that they cannot leave the ship after boarding. A meeting of 500 brides of American servicemen broke up in disorder in Brisbane when the members demanded a public protest against delays in transport to the United States. A large section dissociated itself from any suggestion that the United States authorities had not done all in their power to facilitate their transport.
