UNFIT FOR TRIAL

TREASON CHARGES HELD OVER EZRA POUND’S CONDITION WASHINGTON, (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) Feb. 13. A United States District Court jury found Ezra Pound, the American poet and writer, mentally unsound, therefore Pound will not be tried on treason charges arising from his war-time broadcasts from Italy. Two psychiatrists gave evidence that Pound was a sensitive, eccentric, and cynical person in a paranoic state rendering him unfit for trial. The Associated Press points out that Pound will be detained at St. Elizabeth Mental Hospital in Washington, and could be brought to trial later if his mental condition improves.
