COAL SUPPLIES

EASING OF POSITION QUICKER DELIVERY OF ORDERS Most coal merchants are now able to supply coal to householders within a few days of the receipt of an order. Mr D. R. Wilson, president of the Dunedin Coal Merchants’ Union, said yesterday, however, that the merchants did not hold large reserve stocks, owing to the fact that many householders were endeavouring to build up their reserve supplies for future use. The merchants experienced a particularly busy period when they resumed after the holidays, and made every effort to overtake orders that were not delivered before they closed down. Now, however, the position has eased a little, and consumers were able to place orders for four bags of coal (a quarter-ton) at a time, whereas during the stricter rationing period only two bags were available.
