LEVELS FALLING

AUCKLAND RESERVOIRS FURTHER WATER RESTRICTIONS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 14. Further water restrictions, involving the closing of all fresh water swimming baths except those having circulating filtration systems and the complete prohibition of the washing of vehicles by hoses were announced to-day by the chairman of the Auckland City Council’s Works Committee, Cr A. S. Bailey. Commercial garages using hoses to wash vehicles were exempted from the restrictions imposed last week. Cr Bailey said that for the week ended to-day, the first full week since the restrictions were imposed, an average daily saving of only 1,600,000 gallons had been effected. Before the restrictions began the daily loss in the dams was 11,700,000 gallons. It was now 10,100,000 gallons. The total storage in the dams this morning was 677,000,000 gallons, and with a daily loss of 10,000,000 gallons Auckland’s supply would be exhausted by about the middle of April. It was evident, Cr Bailey continued, that the public had not been sufficiently impressed with the need for economies. Every citizen was again asked to conserve water in every possible way.
