SIXTY YEARS MARRIED

Mr and Mrs G. W. Barltrop, of Wellington, who celebrated their diamond wedding recently, were married by the late Rev. Richard Coffee in St. Mark’s Church, Wellington, on January 26, 1886, and had the somewhat unusual experience of being present at a service of Holy Communion at the same church about the same hour 60 years later. The service was conducted by the Rev. Canon Robertshawe, and many friends were present, including Bishop Holland. An old boy of Nelson College, Mi Barltrop was born at Spring Grove, Nelson, and went to Wellington in 1881 to take up a cadetship in the Government Insurance Office, from which he retired some 23 years ago while holding the office of deputy commissioner. Mrs

Barltrop, formerly Miss Barnard, was born at Oamaru, and went to Wellington with her parents in the early seventies. She was the first pupil teacher appointed to the Newtown School on its opening, and for a number of years held the position of lady district superintendent of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. At their home in Daniell street Mr and Mrs Barltrop received some 90 guests, who came to offer their congratulations on the occasion of the anniversary, and mqny telegrams and messages of congratulation were received from various parts of the Dominion, including messages from the Acting Prime Minister, Mr Nash, the Mayor, Mr Appleton, and from Captain Cameron, formerly master of the Remuera and now residing in London.
