MAORI BATTALION

ARRANGEMENTS FOR WELCOME (P.A.) ■ WELLINGTON, Jan. 4. “About 700 members of the Maori Battalion are expected to arrive at Wellington towards the end of January,” said Mr E. T. Tirikatene, member’ of the Executive Council representing the Maori race, in a statement to-day. “Arrangements are being made to give the men a fitting welcome, to which all Maori tribes are being invited to send representatives. It is proposed that when the men land they •will march to Parliament Buildings, where they will be received by representatives of the Government and the Maori people.” Mr Tirikatene said the men will be commanded by Lieutenant-colonel Henare, a son of the late Mr Tau Henare, M.P., who joined the battalion as a private.
