NOTES FROM RICCARTON

PICCOLO IN WORK AGAIN (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. T. H. Gillett arrived home to-day from Auckland with Hiss Medley and Palfrey. L. J. Ellis returned this morning, but he did not bring Golden Souvenir and Bruce. They will remain at Ellerslie till early next week, when they will be railed to Trentham, where they are to race later in the month. _C.. T. Wilson and K. Nuttall, who did their holiday riding in Otago, left to-day for Reefton, where Wilson’s engagements for to-morrow will include the horses of the Omoto trainer C. J. Walsh. Piccolo had a rest during the holidays, but M. J. Wadley has him in strong work again. There is a chance that he will be sold, but in the meantime he has been nominated for Trentham. Foxhaven was spelled early in the season. but came back in time to be prepared for the recent holiday meetings. He showed a return to form when he won the Waikouaiti Cup, and he should be at his best for Trentham. where he will be raced later in the month. F. A. Roberts intended to race Thornbridge at Trentham, but he has had to change his plans. The Foxbridge three-year-old showed useful form when he was second in the final event at Winga--lui, but as he has not won, he was not eligible for nomination in hack races at Trentham.
