CANTERBURY v. SOUTHLAND HOME TEAM IN STRONG POSITION (P A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. A sound and stylish innings for 46 by C. V. Shirley and some enterprising batting by N. McGowan were features of the first day’s play when a two-day match between Canterbury and Southland began at Lancaster Park to-day. Shirley, the captain of the Southland team, went in after two wickets had fallen and was ninth man out. His runs were made by really good cricket. McGowan scored his 39 runs in even time. When Canterbury batted the weakness of the Southland team was exposed. The bowling was mediocre and the Canterbury batsmen scored easily and steadily to finish the day only 60 behind Southland with nine wickets in hand. R. C. Shand made an attractive 53, and I. B.
