ELLERSLIE CARNIVAL
EXTREME FASHIONS IN HATS There were no marked departures from the conventional trends of fashion of the war years at the Auckland Racing Club's summer carnival, and war-time austerity was still reflected. A noticeable feature of the frocking (says the New Zealand Herald) was the vogue for semi-tailored, light-weight suits and frocks. These were seen in a charming array of gailj'-pat-terned materials, as well as soft pastel shades. The of navy and white and black and whfae retained its popularity. Some of the hats were interesting and amusing examples of extreme fashion. These included the accentuated boaters, coachmen, and bowler designs, and the tall, narrow bell-toppers, while others were composed entirely of filmy veiling and flowers tilted forward and secured to the head with a bandeau. There were also a number of plainer wide-brimmed straw hats and, as a contrast to these, many close-fitting quilted and stretched beret styles, decorated in most cases with a diamante clasp. Their Excellencies the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall and Lady Newall, attended on Cup Day. Her Excellency was wearing a graceful frock of white crepe and a wide-brimmed hat of moss green straw banded and edged with white grosgrain ribbon. Her coat of leaf brown woollen material was finished in a striking plaid design in beige and cream. Miss Diana Newall wore a light fawn ■ ensemble and a brown felt hat, and Miss Georgiana Newall wore a saxe blue frock with a grey full-length coat and a navy blue beret. Miss Nora Walton wore a cream suit with a navy blouse and a cream swathed beret.
