SERVICEMEN’S SETTLEMENT

Until the end of November a total of 143,780 acres of land had been acquired under the provisions of the Small Farms Act for the establishment of ex-servicemen, says the monthly review issued by the Rehabilitation Department. In addition to this area, 8723 acres had been acquired under the compulsory provisions of the Servicemen's Settlement and Land Sales Act. The most recent addition to the above total is a property of almost 1000 acres in the Marlborough land district, about 16 miles south-east of Blenheim. Previously held by Mr C. D. Cunningham and the estate of the late Mr William Cunningham, this property is good sheep country with a considerable area suitable for cropping. Altogether until November 30 the number of properties acquired under section 51 of the Land Sales Act was 109 single units and 42 capable of subdivision into 108 single units, making 217 units in all, with a total acreage of. 44,707 acres. Properties balloted for by ex-service-men during November comprised three sheep sections in the Kenilworth Farm Settlement near Titiroa, Southland, one dairying and cropping section in the Kaikainui settlement, near Kaiapoi, two agricultural sections in the Tua Marina settlement near Blenheim, and four dairying sections in the Milson Farm Settlement near Palmerston North.
