COST OF TWO WARS
In two world wars about 27.000 New Zealanders have lost their lives and nearly 95,000 have been casualties, either sick or wounded or prisoners of war. The total number of New Zealanders who have served overseas in the two wars exceeds 230,000. The direct financial cost of both wars has been £716,249,000 to March 31, 1946, including £76,000,000 for the last war. The cost of this war to March 31 last was £507.000,000 and £ 139,490,000 is provided for the current year, which includes £18.000,000 gratuities and £5,000,000 deferred pay. The average cost of the war just ended has been approximately £4OO a head of population.
