AIRCRAFT PROGRESS
NEW RECONNAISSANCE PLANE NEW YORK, Dec. 30.
The Republic Aviation Corporation's new XF 12 reconnaissance plane, which has a greater speed and range than the war's largest bombers, will be ready to fly in a few weeks. The aircraft has a wingspan of 129 feet, and is powered by four Pratt-Whitney 28cylinder motors with an emergency power rating of more than 3650 horsepower each. The XF 12 is equipped with three camera stations and also a darkroom, enabling cameras to be loaded and films developed in flight. The War Department has forbidden publication of details of performance, but Republic previously announced that the Rainbow transport plane, which resembles the XF 12 in description, cruises at more than 400 miles an hour at 40,000 feet, with a range of more than 4000 miles.
