AUSTRIA’S CLAIM
RETURN OF SOUTH TYROL IMPORTANT RECONSTRUCTION STEP VIENNA, Dec. 21. Austria would claim the return to her of the South Tyrol, said the new Chancellor, Dr Leopold Figl, in his first speech to Parliament. He declared that the restoration of territorial unity was one of the most important steps for reconstruction. He appealed to the Allies for the reduction of the occupation forces, and the opening of the demarcation lines. Dealing with domestic issues, Dr Figl said the Government intended to nationalise key industries, particularly certain sections of the power industry. The Government would not hesitate to step in when private enterprise failed from social, political, or business viewpoints. He promised co-opera-tion with their neighbours, particularly Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Jugoslavia, with whom it was the Government’s most urgent task _to make contact and discover a solution to differences.
