TREATMENT OF JEWS
THE BRITISH ZONE REPLY TO CRITICISM LONDON, Dec. 20. “ Criticism abroad about treatment of Jewish people in the British zone in Germany is unjustified and deliberately fabricated,” said Mr J. B. Hynd (Lab.) in the House of Commons. A relatively small proportion of Jews remained in the British zone, and they received the same treatment as other displaced people. They had priority over the German population, and their scale of rationing was above that the Germans received. Mr Hynd denied that people had been placed in Belsen. This camp had been destroyed. The fact was that about 9500 Jews were accommodated nearby in the brick barracks formerly occupied by members of the S.S. This was now run by the British Red Cross.
