PROPOSED NEW ROUTE TO TAIERI
Sir. —l have read that the Dunedin City Council proposes a new route to Kaikorai and beyond by running up through the Roberts property at Littlebourne, etc. Would it not be much better to tunnel the Roslyn hill? A tunnel running from say, Maclaggan street, opposite the Arcade, would eliminate all haulage costs. I believe it would be almost level, if rur. out, say, near the bottom of Fraser’s Gully. Over the years the saving on power, let alone wear and tear, would amply repay any expenditure. If necessary. large haulage firms could pay annual tolls. The material removed would supply ample filling for the head of the bay or the depressions of Lower Kaikorai. Over 50 years such a tunnel would save enormous mileage and power. Those cf us who ate exiled from Dunedin think Littlebourne House would best be preserved as the High School rectory.— I am, etc., George Thomson. New Plymouth, December 19.
