EASED FOR THE HOLIDAYS (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 21. A further lifting of the restrictions on the use of gas and electricity was announced by the Minister of Local Government, Mr J. J. Cahill, to-day. Listdners will have longer periods in which they may use their radio sets. The ironing and washing periods have been extended. Some concession to the holiday spirit has been made by allowing theatres to open for limited periods. The cooking periods have been lengthened and a special effort has been made to make the Christmas and New Year holidays as pleasant as possible in spite of the shortage of coal. Householders will now be permitted to use a single light up to 11 pun., compared with 9 p.m. previously. Gas coppers may now be used in any two hours of the week, and the time for ironing is also limited to two hours a week as is convenient to householders. Listeners may operate receiving sets between 7 and 8 a.m. and 7 and 10 p.m. All restrictions, with the exception of those applying to factories, shops, warehouses, offices, advertising signs, shop fronts, and display lighting hotwater storage systems, and bath heaters have been lifted from 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve to midnight on Boxing Day, and from 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve to midnight on New Year’s Day. Broadcasting stations will be permitted to operate throughout these periods.
