THE SPANISH LEADER
COMPLICITY WITH HITLER (Rec 1.15 a.m.) PARIS, Dec. 16. Disclosures at the Nuremberg war crimes trial concerning Franco’s complicity with Hitler influenced the French Government’s Note to Britain and America regarding relations with Spain, says Reuter’s correspondent. Usually reliable sources state that the Note consisted of two main parts—first, in view of Franco’s complicity with Hitler, the French Government felt it desirable and necessary that relations with Spain should be broken off, but the Government did not wish to act unilaterally, and therefore requested the British and American views; secondly, the Note raised the question of recognising the Spanish “ shadow Cabinet ” |Of Republican exiles headed .by Dr Jose Giral. The correspondent adds that the French Foreign Office stated that the Note, which was despatched after, prolonged and insistent pressure by the press, was not sent to Russia,, as Russia was not maintaining diplomatic ■relations with Spain. A representative of the World Jewish Congress; announced that the Spanish Government was allowing the synagogue to • reopen in Barcelona in the near future. It is the first to be permitted to open since the civil war.
