PENINSULA SHOW

SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION FINE DISPLAY OF HORSES The Otago Peninsula A. and P. Society was fortunate in having fine weather for its sixty-eighth annual show at Fortobello on Saturday, and this, combined with the record entries numbering 740, many of an exceptional quality, assured the success of the fixture. The society this year made a bold bid for increased support from, exhibitors and the public by making substantial additions to the prize money, and its commendable enterprise in this respect was well rewarded. The entries, as already stated, were a record, and the gate' takings were the second highest' in the history of the society i The horse sections again attracted entries of many high-class animals, and competition, generally, was exceptionally keen. The judge of the draught horses, Mr C. T. McCallum, was enthusiastic about the standard in several ,of the classes, and he had no hesitation in describing the spring-cart horses as the best he had seen at any show in the South Island this season. The first prize-winner m the section for decorated horse and harness, Mr W. A. Campbell’s entry, was particularly' worthy of commendation, Mr McCallum said. The light horse section was also strong, and the judge, Mr A. Walker, did not have an easy task in selecting the section winners. The hacks and ponies attracted special attention. -.The two-year-old stallion, and the 13Jstone hacks were- particularly outstanding. In the cattle sections, the Ayrshires were showing signs of the backward season, but otherwise they were up to a high standard. A two-year-old shown by" Mr J. R. Dick, and also a yearling heifer exhibited by Mr J. C. Aitken, jun., earned the unstinted praise of the judge, Mr N. W. Crosby. Some good specimens of \ the Jersey breed were shown, the champion bull and cow, and also the yearling bulls, firiding favour. The dog trial attracted a number of fairly useful dogs, but the judge, Mr G. Ross, pointed out that the course was too difficult, and that something should be done to keep the public from encroaching on it. The prizewinning collie dog, he said, was a fair specimen of the breed. The competitions were again the big draw-card, but unfortunately many farmers who had to attend to milking, and a large section of the general public, left some time before these were completed, and the society might be well advised to make an earlier start. The Otago Peninsula Leaping Championship was again won by Mr E. W. Stancombe’s Noble John, with Mr J. S. McKay’s Dictator second. Mr. D. F. O’Connell’s Viking, who won the South Island Jumping Championship at Invercargill on Wednesday of last week, was not produced. The grand parade of stock, which made an impressive display, was led by the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band. THE PRIZE LIST The prize list was as follows: — DRAUGHT HORSES (Judge: Mr C. T.
