40-HOUR WEEK ON FARMS

SOUTH CANTERBURY PROPOSALS (P.A.) TIMARU, Dec. 14. A decision to set up a committee lo present proposals for a 40-hour week on the farms was. made at a meeting of the South Canterbury executive of the Federated Farmers to-day. Consideration will be given to the prices for farm produce and co-operation with other sections of the community in bringing the proposed measure into effect. This decision was made after a long discussion in which it was mentioned that the farmers produced about 93 per cent, of the wealth of New Zealand as a result of working long hours. The president, Mr J. Dempsey, said it was unreasonable to expect other sections of the community to handle that produce in a 40-hour week. A 40-hour week for farm labourers did not mean a 40-hour week for farmers, who had to work longer.
