NATION-WIDE DRIVE
SMASHING OF “BLACK MARKET” AMERICA’S INTENTIONS NEW YORK, Def. 13. ■ The Government has undertaken a nation-wide drive to smash the “black market” in clothing and textiles. The Attorney-general, Mr T. C. Clark, says this has grown vastly more serious in the past few months, interfering with the stabilitv of the national economy and tending to bring on a runaway market and inflation. Mr Clark said that whereas an overcharge of 10 per cent, was considered a serious violation a year ago, illegal premiums of 100 to 200 per cent- were at present common. \ Demobilised soldiers canot get suits and brides cannot get sheets, towels, and other household essentials. Shop shelves are practically empty of standard commodities.
