Friday, December 14 (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Theft of Petrol Arthur William Williamson, a truck driver, aged 28, and John Clutterbuck, a labourer, aged 31, both of whom were represented by Mr C. H. Stevens, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a 44-gallon drum of petrol valued at £8 9s 2d from George Firth Knarston.—Chief-detective T. Y. Hall said that the accused had taken the drum from the back of the complainant’s truck which was parked outside the Commercial Hotel at Green Island. They had then removed it to an empty section and had sold 11 gallons at 4s a gallon. The accused refused to disclose the whereabouts of the petrol, none of which had been recovered.—Williamson was released on probation for one year and was ordered to make restitution of £8 ,9s 2d. Clutterbuck was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Released on Probation Joseph Reid, a labourer, was released on probation fof two years when he appeared on remand on a charge of the theft of a Post Office Savings book and £8 11s 6d, the property of Frank King. He was ordered to make restitution of 12s 6d. Chief Detective Hall said that the remainder of the money had been recovered.
