ACCREDITING SCHEME

X UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE HEADMASTER’S CRITICISM “ I cannot pretend to be strictly satisfied with the University's accrediting scheme,” stated the headmaster (of the Wanganui Collegiate School, Mr F. W. Gilligan, in his annual report. “ To my, perhaps, old-fashioned way of thinking, there are two inequalities—first, that the university authorities have ‘ passed the buck ’ to headmasters: and, secondly, that, however fairly headmasters seek to make their assessments, there can be no common denominator.

“ I cannot see what is the objection to making all boys actually sit for the examination, particularly as no one is allowed to be a candidate for both the entrance and the scholarship examinations in one and the same year. “ In passing, it would be interesting to know why the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge are not prepared to accept the University of New Zealand accrediting scheme, and why the New Zealand University authorities are not prepared to afford facilities for a boy wishing to obtain exemption from the entrance examination of the older universities.”
