JUMPED FROM TRAIN
PRISONER EVADES ESCORT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. . While being escorted by the police from Taumarunui to Auckland a prisoner escaped from the Wellington express at Mercer at 6.15 a.m. to-day. He was Patrick Mcßae, aged 24, a labourer. Shortly before the express reached Mercer, Mcßae asked to be allowed to go for a drink of water. The constable escorted him, but at the end of the carriage the door slammed between them, and when the constable opened it the prisoner had disappeared. He had apparently jumped from the train as it slackened speed on approaching the station. No trace of Mcßae could be found during the search of the locality.
