AID FOR FRENCH

R.A.F. IN INDO-CHINA UNDERTAKEN RELUCTANTLY (Rec. 0.10 a.m.) SAIGON, Dec. 13. An air attack on an Annamese mortar emplacement 60 miles north of Dalat was authoritatively described as “the first and probably the last” R.A.F. offensive operation on behalf, of the French in *lndo-China. The Associated Press of America correspondent says the mission took the British beyond their commitments in Indo-China —the disarmament of the Japanese and the rescue of Allied prisoners of war. The British commander undertook it reluctantly after an urgent appeal from a French detachment which found itself out-gunned and after the French had made known that they were not ready to man their own airfield. One brigade of the Twentieth Indian Division stationed in Indo-China is due to leave for Morotai in January to relieve the Australian troops of occupational duties.
