NO APPLES ON BOARD
CREW REFUSES TO SAIL DAY’S DELAY AT, GREYMOUTH Because there was not a case of apples on board at sailing time on Tuesday night, the crew of the Holmlea, in port at Greymouth and coal-laden for New Plymouth, refused to take the ship to sea, and .again took this attitude on Wednesday morning. The award referring to this states that each member of the crew shall have an apple daily if procurable. Efforts were made by the vessels Greymouth agents on Tuesday to procure a case of apples, but not one fruiterer in the town could meet the request, and .the mem.refused to take “ specs,” which; were the only apples available . The Minister of Marine, Mr O Brien. was communicated with in Wellington, and finally, by making selections from several cases of “ specs ” on Wednesday morning, a case of fairly good apples was obtained and the ship departed in the afternoon. It is thought that the trouble commenced on Tuesday morning, when two members of the crew attempting to buy some apples for their own use were told bv a Greymouth fruiterer that he kept the apples he had for his own customers, thus giving the men the impression that there were apples available in the town.
