ATTITUDE OF MINISTER

COMMENT BY WESTPORT SECRETARY CP.A.) WESTPORT, Dec. 13. “Members of the Westport branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants have for some time been concerned as to probable happenings when the man-power restrictions are lifted, and the methods to be adopted to protect members from the type of railway official mentioned in the October issue of the Advocate will be discussed at a meeting on Monday evening,” said Mr F. H. McEachran, secretary of the branch, to-night. “It is regrettable, but nevertheless true, that there exists in the railway service a type of official who glories in ‘ bullying, jeering, sneering, and general fault-finding.’ “ The Minister himself can hardly claim exemption,” Mr McEachran said. “I would remind him of the remarks he made a few years ago at Invercargill when acknowledging a carefullyprepared resolution placed before him. On that occasion he stated that he would ‘sink the boot in’ and as Minister ‘he had the power to retaliate and would use it.’ Were such remarks made to the employees of a private firm, Mr Semple would know how to answer them."
