Mr J. S. Jack was a passenger lor tne north by rail yesterday. Sir Charles Norwood, o£ Wellington, arrived in Dunedin yesterday on a business visit.

Mr S. Osmond has been appointed general manager of the A.M.P. Society, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Mr A. W. Sneddon. At a social function arranged by the Otago Swimming Centre last night the president (Mr D. F. Watson) congratulated Sergeant J. Hogg on being awarded the Military Medal. Sergeant Hogg was formerly the Dunedin Club’s delegate on the centre. The appointment of Mr T. N. Rive as lecturer in the department of music at the Auckland University College has been announced.* Mr Rive has been on the staff of the National Broadcasting Service as assistant programme organiser for station IYA for the last, seven years. He served in the forces from 1942 to 1944, and since his discharge he has been a part-time lecturer in music at Auckland University College. He was educated at the Waimate High School and Auckland University College, where he completed the degree of bachelor of music in 1943. Five members of the staff of John McGlashan College who have relinquished their appointments, most of which were for the duration of the war, were bidden farewell by their colleagues at an afternoon function on Wednesday. They were Mesdames H. Harvie and M. E. Patrick, and Messrs J. Hunter, R. Phillipps and J. Williams. Mr Williams was unable to be present because of illness. The headmaster, Mr J. Conolly, spoke of the great assistance the departing members had given to the college during the war years. A presentation was made to each of the guests. Passengers who left for the north by air yesterday were Mr F C. Bell for Christchurch, Mrs M. McKinlay, Mr S. D. Macpherson, Mr S. Ringrose, Miss J. Chisholm and Mr T. Barnett for Wellington, Mr R. S. Pratt and Mr and Mrs K. Rigby for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr and Mrs E H. Dane from Auckland, Mrs D. Wilkie, Miss M. W. Wall, Mrs W. A. Jamieson, Mrs D. L. Christie, Miss B. M. Ewan and Mr N. G. Silver from Wellington, Mr and Mrs McLachlan from Christchurch. Passengers for the south yesterday were Mrs J. Elliott, Mr A. Wachner, and Mr and Mrs E. H. Dane.
