PRIZE LISTS

OTAGO BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

BREAK-UP CEREMONY The chairman of the Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors (Mr W. R. Brugh) presided at the annual break-up ceremony last night of the Otago Boys’ High School. There was a large attendance of parents old boys, and friends of the school, and the guest speaker was Air Commodore R. B. Bannerman, who was introduced by the chairman as not only a distinguished old boy of the school, but also a notable link with the earliest history of the province of Otago, inasmuch as he is a grandson of the Rev. Dr Thomas Burns who arrived in Otago with Captain Cargill in. 1848. Opening the procedings, Mr Brugh said that 1945 had produced the first peacetime break-up that any boy then at the school had experienced. It had been a glorious year, and it was ending with the promises' of a better future for the fulfilment of which youth must work unceasingly. It was up to youth to see to it in the years to come that the future of the world took no account of global warfare or atomic bombs. War Memorial Plan After referring to the record of old boys in the war, Mr Brugh said that the Old Boys’ Society proposed to erect a library as a memorial to the fallen and those who had served their country, and he expressed the hope that that desirable objective would be attained by the time the centenary of the province was celebrated in 1948. After a brief address Air Commodore Bannerman presened the prizes won during the year, and the dux, O. D. Smnh. was introduced to the gathering by the rector (Mr H. P. Kidson). who referred to his outstanding ability and also to his application and hard work, the combination of which had won him his distinction. At the conclusion of the prize-giving the rector spoke of the part played by old boys of the school during the war. No fewer than 2255 had, been engaged on active service, and of these 239 had lost their lives. Of the killed, 100 had been in the army, 19 in the navy, and 120 m the air force. One out of every five of the school’s old boys in the air force had given their lives, and one in every nine of those who joined the services had been killed. This meant that of the total number of New Zealanders killed during the war one in every 50 was an ol d b°y of the Otago Boys’ High School Old boys had won 193 decorations, which were distributed among 144 individuals One in 15 had gained recognition for distinguished service. The speaker emphasised that he had mentioned these figures not merely as a boast of what the school had achieved, but with the idea of suggesting something of the terrific loss of talented Ind promising youth that the country had to bear as a result of the war.
