UNMARRIED MOTHERS
CARED FOR BY STATE A WELL-KEPT SECRET (Ree. 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 29. Unmari'ied mothers and their babies have been cared for by the State for the last two and a-half years without the public knowing their secret. The Health Department has released a story of the system by which a number of residential homes take in unmarried mothers, and provide prenatal and ante-natal care for the mothers and the children. Mothers who enter as “ Miss Somebody ’’ are permitted to change their names by deed poll to “Mrs Somebody Else.” The babies are registered under the new names. The matron of one hospital told the Daily Mail that the homes are run on enlightened lines. The mothers did the housework, and were taught to care for the children. They could have visitors or invite their parents to stay overnight.
