GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council, held last night, was attended by the Mayor, Mr J. Boomer, and Crs T. McAhan, F. Gray, W. Dickinson, L. Burgess, W. Wynn T. Mason, W. Inglis, ,J. Swan, and C. McMullen. Saving in Interest Commenting on a clause in the report of the Works Committee regarding the proposed street improvement loan, the town clerk (Mr R. J- K. Gillies) said he had made an agreement with the Dunedin Savings Bank by which the interest on the loan had been fixed at 30 per cent which meant a saving of £lls to the ratepayers.—lt was decided that a circular should be prepared by the town clerk explaining the loan to the ratepayers. Housing Needs Cr Dickinson, presenting the report of the Finance Committee, recommended that a letter be forwarded to the member for the district, Mr F. Jones, expressing the council's strong disappointment at the Housing Department's decision not to purchase the Shand’s estate property in Green Island for housing purposes.—The Mayor supported the recommendation and said that there were 350 men from the district still overseas, and in view of their housing needs the Government should purchase the land.—The report was adopted. Accounts totalling £1374 5s 9d were passed for payment. Playing Areas Referring to a clause in the Reserves and Cemetery Committee’s report, which recommended that the police be asked to take action in regard to vandalism at the pavilion in Miller Park, Cr Dickinson suggested that amenities be provided for children in the park and that other playing areas be created there. By that means, he said, energy would be diverted from vandalism to harmless sport.—The Mayor ehdorsed the suggestion, and instanced the amenities provided for children at Bathgate Park,—Cr Gray said the Green Island area was being built on at such a rate that the council should waste no time to make arrangements for another playing area.—The question of finance and the extra burden which would soon fall on the ratepayers were mentioned by Cr McAhan. No motion was moved, but the matter was referred to the Reserves and Cemetery Committee. On the recommendation of the Water, Lighting, and Drainage Committee. it was decided that a deputation consisting of the Mayor, Cr Dickinson, and the town clerk should wait on the medical officer regarding the condition of the Kaikorai Stream.
