FRENCH ELECTIONS
BIG SOCIALIST GAINS SETBACKS FOR RIGHT WING PARIS, Oct. 1. The final results of the departmental elections show big Socialist gains. They have 967 seats, compared with 492 before the war. The Communists have also gained. Before the war they held 72 seats; at present they have 362. The Right Wing parties suffered severely. Their seats dropped from 599 eight years ago to 269. The Republicans, who previously held 426 seats, at present have 196. The various parties hold seats as follows: — Left Wingers: Communists 362. Socialists 811, Unified Socialists 156, Radical Socialists 607, Christian Socialists 23Q, Independents 26. Centre: Radical Independents 112. Right Wingers: Republicans and Democrats 158. Republican Federation 69, Independents of the Right 144, Conservatives 46, Independents 79.
