Latin poems would be unintelligible to New Zealanders in about three years’ time, said Professor A. W. Sew'ell, professor of English at Auckland University College, addressing the Auckland Rotary Club. He was referring to works written in Latin by the poet Milton. ” We consider in this country that we have got past Latin. We do far better things." he added, amid laughter.
