87,178 FROM SERVICES VOCATIONAL PLACEMENTS The return of 3928 service men and women from overseas and the release of 1153 from the home forces during August is recorded in the Rehabilitation Department’s monthly review. Service personnel returned to civil life up to the end of August totalled 87,178, of whom 56,137 had returned from overseas and 31,041 had been discharged from home service. The re-establishment position at August 31 was as follows: —Self placed in employment, 19,568; returned to preservice employment, 20,906: placed by department. 15,249; undergoing training subsidy with private employers, 1467; undergoing full-time studies and trade training in rehabilitation training centres. 1484; therapeutic employment, 39; returned to own business, 2382; returned to qwn farm, 1564; acquired own business, 2972: acquired own farm, 1265; enrolled with department for placement, fully fit 97, fit for light work only 241; not-yet discharged (returned to service, on leave in hospital, etc.), 16,405;. intentions undecided, refused help, etc., 1898; depending -on private means. 359: left New Zealand, 176; domestic duties (women), 697; deceased, 409. The Maoris included in the total figures number 1630 men and 2 women returned from overseas, and 758 men and 43 women released from home service.
