NASEBY

LORY CUP FOOTBALL The first series of Rugby matches for the Lory Cup was played at Naseby on Saturday. Although rain had fallen during the night, the ground was in excellent order. The matches were played in brilliant sunshine, with a complete absence of wind. There was a large attendance of spectators. The cup was won by Naseby, of which club Sergeant William Lory, in whose memory the cup was presented, was a former member. In the first match Naseby defeated Southern by 8 points to 6. The score at half time was 3 all. a penalty goal to Naseby and a try to Southern. In the second spell McGill made a fine opening for McNutt to score and give Southern a lead by 6 to 3. In the closing stages Brown scored for Naseby, and with this try converted Naseby gained the lead, which it held to win by 8 points to 6. The second match was between Ranfurly and Ida Valley, and the former won by 6 points to 3. The winner’s points were made up of two good tries by Forrester.

The final between the winners of the two earlier matches, Naseby and Ranfuriy, was fast and hard fought. A try by Brown in the first spell gave Naseby a lead of 3 points to ml. In about the last 10 minutes Ranfurly gained the upper hand, but was unable to penetrate the solid defence, Naseby thus winning the match and the cup by 3 points to nil. At the .conclusion of the matches, Mr P. Clarke, representing the Maniototo Sub-union, congratulated the Naseby Club on its win, and also conveyed thanks to the members of the St. John Ambulance for their services during the year, and especially on that afternoon, when they were called upon to attend to 22 casualties. At the dance held at night Mr W J. Inder, representing Mr William Lory, of Dunedin, the donor, presented the cup to D. Francis, captain of the winning team.
