LAWN TENNIS UNION
AFFILIATION WITH O.L.T.A. PROPOSAL APPROVED By 18 votes to 7, club delegates at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Lawn Tennis Union last night approved of a proposal that the union should affiliate with the Otago Lawn Tennis Association as a sub-association. A sub-committee consisting of the president, Mr E. L. Hope, the chairman of committee, Mr R. W. Facer, a vicepresident, Mr F. J. Sims, and the secretary, Mr D. H. Mason, was appointed to meet a delegation from the association to draw up an agreement regarding the terms of the affiliation. Mr Hope explained that the union had been approached by the association with the suggestion that it should affiliate and had been assured that it would still be permitted to administer its own competitions. The association had agreed that the union should have a stronger representation on the association than the sub-association, and that it would be given the use of the courts at Logan Park on a limited number of Saturdays during the season. It was felt that affiliation would strengthen the hand of the one controlling body in the administration of lawn tennis in Dunedin. Mr Sims said that affiliation would have to come at some time, and the union would be wise to approve of the suggestion. As a result union players would be given the opportunity of playing in provincial matches and some of the younger players would be able to receive coaching under the association’s scheme.
The proposal was agreed to. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the president said that during the past season there had been a revival in lawn tennis owing to the improvement in the supply of balls, and as ample supplies were assured this season through normal trade channels, it was likely that the clubs would soon be back to full strength again. It was hoped that the union’s competitors would be reestablished on a pre-war basis and that the usual trophies would again be competed for. Mr C. K. Pritchett, who seconded the motion, referred to the fact that the large number of tennis balls handled by the union had imposed a great deal of extra work on the secretary, who had not received full support from some of the clubs.
The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr E. L. Hope; vice-presidents —Dr W. H. Borrie, Miss A. Connor, Messrs A. T. Mclndoe, H. Connor F. J. Sims, R. McKinnon, R Corkin, F. Laidlaw, C. Bowie, and M. Robson; chairman of committee, Mr R, W. Facer; secretary, Mr D. H. Mason; treasurer, Mr C. K. Pritchett; auditor, Mr F. J. Sims; publicity officer Miss D. Ross; management committee—Messrs T. Chesney, H. Hey. A. Lindsay, C. Gray. K. Alderton, Mrs Hannan, Miss H. Winefield; delegates to Council of Sport, Messrs Hope and Sims. , , It was decided to commence club matches on Saturday, October 13, and that the pre-war competitions for union trophies be re-established.
