NAVY LEAGUE SEA CADETS WELL REPRESENTED ON GAMBIA One of the cruisers in Tokio Bay for the signing of the peace with Japan is H.M.N.Z.S. Gambia, representing New Zealand. Among the personnel on this ship are 23 ex-sea cadets from the Navy League (Otago branch) Sea Cadet Corps. More than 130 boys who received their training in the local corps have served in the Royal Navy or the merchant service during the war. The Sea Cadet Corps is not just a war-time organisation, but a permanent branch of the Navy League’s activities, and is regarded as a reservoir from which the navy and merchant service may draw recruits. It is an entirely voluntary organisation, and many of the cadets, though receiving their early training in seamanship, do not necessarily take up either of the sea services as a career.
