TRAINING COLLEGES

TOURNAMENT COMMENCED DUNEDIN LEADS FOR SHIELD The annual tournament between the Christchurch and Dunedin Training Colleges was commenced yesterday, when the swimming contest and the men’s and women’s indoor basketball matches for the Tournament Shield were held. The debating contest, which does not count for the shield, was also held yesterday. The lawn tennis competition, which was to have been played yesterday, was postponed until this afternoon on account of the conditions. Men’s and women’s hockey matches will be played to-day. Christchurch had a comfortable win in the swimming section, in which some excellent performances were achieved, and the men’s and women’s indoor basketball matches were both won by Dunedin. The shield points at the end of the day were: Dunedin 4. Christchurch 2. The honours in the debate went to Christchurch. CHRISTCHURCH WINS SWIMMING The swimming competition between the two colleges was held at the Y.M.C.A. Baths yesterday morning, Christchurch being the winner by 19 points to 6. Nine events were held, Christchurch winning seven and Dunedin two. Several wellknown provincial representatives competed, and the standard of swimming was good. In the men's section L. Barry, a former New Zealand junior champion, swept the pool for Christchurch, winning all four individual events by comfortable margins as well as swimming in the winning relay team. He was successful at each of the three styles of swimming. The women’s events were evenly contested, each team winning two events. The following were the results:— Women’s Events.—4o Yards Free Style: J. Hodges (C.) 1. M. Steven (D.) 2, B. Hurst (C.) 3; time, 26sec. 60 Yards Free Style: M. Steven (D.) 1, A. Clare (C.) 2. B. WOMEN’S INDOOR BASKETBALL The women’s indoor basketball match resulted in an easy win for Dunedin by 21 points to 2. The winners handled more surely and made better use of their opportunities in front of the goal. The teams were:—Christchurch—H. Henderson, B. Rehu, A. Walker, M. Jamieson, M. Petterson. and H. Burrows. Dunedin— K. Brydon, M. Keller, N. Esau, S. Stone, B. Naismith, and B. Colquhoun. Mr W. Wallace was the referee. MEN’S BASKETBALL The men's indoor basketball match was won by Dunedin by 18 goals to 16 after a game in which excitement ran high in the closing stages, Dunedin scoring the winning goal just before the call of time after being down B—4 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams maintained a fast pace, and executed some clever moves, though there was a tendency to bunch in front of the goal. The teams were;—Dunedin—H. Mills, M. M. Strawbridge, L. Sissons, V. Richards, and J. Mann. Christchurch—D. Ryan, N. Horgan, G. Davies, M. Murchie, and R. Keenan. Messrs R. O. Johnson and N. Roydhouse were the referees. DEBATING CONTEST

The subject of the debate, which was held in the Wallace Hall at the Training College, was: "That Federal World Government is Essential to a Lasting Peace.” Mr J. W. Armstrong was the chairman, and Mr G. Parkyn was the judge. Dunedin took the affirmative, the leader (R. Foord) being supported by Miss J. McKenzie and R. Sanders. M. O’Callaghan led for Christchurch, being followed by M. Murchie and Miss B. Sloan. The judge stated that a good deal of irrelevancy had been introduced into the debate, and in drawing a red herring across the trail in the discussion of the practicability of the proposal the affirmative side had debated the question on Christchurch ground and had won on it. Five hundred points were the maximum, and the points scored were as follows: Christchurch 308, Dunedin 272. The judge assessed M. O'Callaghan and Miss Sloan as the best individual speakers. Each scored 68 points out of 100. R. Foord was next.
