At Riccarton Haughty Winner carried 8.11 and ran The Raker 7.2 to a neck in 2min 3 2-ssec. He had 10 others behind him. It was a great performance to give The Raker 231 b in a record time for a handicap. The track record is 2min 2M-ssec, put up by Bronze “Eagle 7.12, or 131 b less than Haughty Winner carried. The Raker was a good performer in his day. He ran a dead-heat "in the Dunedin Cup in 1943, and Palfrey gained a very narrow verdict over him in the following year.
