AIR FORCE KNITTING

Visiting patriotic knitting committees and South Island branches of Air Force Relations (a patriotic fund organisation), Mrs Isitt (wife of Air Vice Marshal Isittj, Dominion president, and Miss E. Constance Morice, Dominion secretary of Air Force Relations, met the executive members of the Mayoress’s Patriotic Wool Committee at the provincial patriotic'headquarters in the Garrison Hall on Monday. The visitors were welcomed by the Mayoress, Mrs D. C. Cameron. Members of the local branch of Air Force Relations were also present. In the course of an interesting talk on the kn,tt'ing of comforts for the air force, Miss Morice commended the patriotic knitters of Otago for their splendid knitting, and said that comforts forwarded from Otago were so well made and so highly regarded at Wellington headquarters that they were accepted without inspection and were despatched overseas as forwarded. Stressing the necessity for continuation of the knitting of comforts for the air force, she said that such articles as V-necked sleeveless pullovers, V-necked long-sleeved pullovers, polonecked pullovers, and socks were still required. She gave an assurance that a complete check was being kept of all stocks of air force comforts and that there was no possibility of any air force comforts being destroyed even at the close of the war. A large shipment had recently been sent to England so that every airman prisoner of war could be given a complete set. Arrangements had also been made to provide comforts for every New Zealander in the R.A.F. This shipment had depleted stocks of comforts held in New Zealand, and as ample wool was now available it was hoped that knitters would respond to the need. Those present were afterwards the guests of Mrs W. K. Cameron, convener of the Provincial Wool Committee, at afternoon tea. On Tuesday, Mrs Isitt and Miss Morice visited the branch of Air Force Relations at Taieri. and were welcomed bv Mrs Matheson and Mrs Wylie. They left the same evening for Invercargill. ______________
