WORLD SUPPLIES
SHORTAGES REVEALED LONDON, May 22. In a statement on world supplies based on consumption levels in the early part of 1945 compared with the demand, including the requirements of liberated Europe, but not Japaneseheld territories, the Minister of Agriculture revealed the following shortages:—Meat and bacon, 1,795,000 tons; canned fish, 383,000 tons; cheese, 96,000 tons; full-cream canned milk, 425.000 tons; full-cream skimmed milk powder, 149,000 tons; edible and technical fats and oils, 1,437,000 tons; and refined sugar, 1,853,000 tons. The new British food cuts represent a daily reduction of between 100 and 150 calories.
