THREATENED BY U-BOAT
DUKE OF GLOUCESTER’S CONVOY
RUGBY, May 22. A German U-boat which threatened the convoy in which the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester embarked on their passage to Australia was destroyed by the British frigate Nyasaland. This is revealed by awards to two officers and four ratings of the Nyasaland. The two officers are the commanding -officer, Lieutenant-com-mander John Scott, who receives a bar to .the D.S.C., and Sub-lieutenant Frank Baldock, who is awarded the D.S.C.
Shortly before midnight on December 17, when the convoy was passing through the U-boat danger area, the Nyasaland detected a submerged Üboat south of the coast of Ireland, and attacked with depth charges. Shortly afterwards an extremely heavy explosion occurred, lifting the Nyasaland in the water. A large patch of oil welled to the surface, and it was considered that the U-boat was destroyed.
