GRUELLING FIGHTING
BOUGAINVILLE CAMPAIGN ENEMY’S HEAVY LOSSES (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 23. In six months of guelling fighting on Bougainville, troops of the Australian 3rd and 11th Divisions have killed more than 5000 Japanese. An Army Department announcement to-day released details of the Australian units engaged in these operations. A high tribute was paid to the splendid air sunport of the R.N.Z.A.F. by dropping bombs and depth charges along the route of the Australians’ advance. New Zealand-manned planes forced the Japanese to abandon a strong defensive* position.
