LOCAL BOXING WORLD
AROUND THE GYMNASIUMS Roy Stevens, thS Auckland professional boxer, will arrive in Dunedin to-morrow, and will work out each day in the Otago Boxing Association gymnasium in Princes street. He will be trained and seconded by Archie Leckie for his bout against Norm Ross, of the West Coast, on June 4. Ross will arrive in Dunedin next week with his trainer, Frank Bell. Ross’s record to date is 27 bouts; won 23; lost two; and drew two. Seventeen bouts were won on points, six by the knock-out, and the remainder were technical knock-outs. Ross has beaten some of the best men in New Zealand, and has decisions over Frank Martin, E. ©’Neill, and L. Turner, leading Wellington middle-weights. He is one of the few to gain a decision over Jack Tagelagi, the Air Force champion. In his only professional contest, Ross easily defeated E. O’Neill at Wellington last month. _ , . . Among the amateurs, J. Tobin, one of Kindley’s feather-weights, is training hard, as is George McKay, who fought in Dunedin a few seasons ago and is now a middle-weight. A. Sime is a promising novice welter-weight. All three are in Kindley’s school. McGlashan College boxing classes will re-commence tomorrow night. Mr A. Goodman will shortly have a large class of students in training at the University. Christian Brothers boxing classes will re-commence early in June. Mr Archie Leckie has over 20 promising pupils in his school K. Skinner, the Otago heavy-weight, will meet “Bomber” Brown, of Invercargill, in Dunedin on June 4. Ross, Anderson, and Perry are all training hard for their preliminaries to the Stevens-Ross contest. Lex Greaney has several new boys in his class. Redding, who fought in the heavyweight class last year, has recommenced training. It is likely that a novice tournament will • be staged as preliminaries to the Hansen-Murphy contest in the Town Hall on June 25. Large entries will no doubt be the reward of the Otago Boxing Association if it should decide on this step.
