WIN FOR AUSTRALIA

VICTORY TEST MATCH PEPPER’S MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 22 Australia defeated England in the victory test by six wickets. A crowd of 8000 saw the Anal day’s play. The wicket was easy, and did not suit the spin bowlers, but Australia’s spinners. Pepper and Ellis, troubled the English batsmen throughout. Hammond and Robertson batted confidently and aggressively, but the remainder played a defensive game. Edrich was verv sedate.

Australia had 70 minutes in which to score 106 runs. They started disastrously, losing two wickets for 11 runs, but Hassett and Pepper saved the side. Pepper, a burly New South Wales player, gave a magnificent display of free hitting, and thrilled the crowd, which cheered a lusty hit into the grandstand for 6 off Stephenson. Australia scored the required runs in the last over of the day. Following are the scores:—

England, second innings, 294 (Hutton 21, Washbrook 32, Robertson 84, Hammond 33. Edrich 50, Robins 33: Pepper four for 80, Ellis two for 33, Price two for 40).

Australia, second innings, four for 107 (Hassett 37. Pepper not out 54). Australia won by six wickets.
