SEVEN COLLIERIES IDLE

NEW SOUTH WALES-MINES

HEAVY LOSS OF PRODUCTION SYDNEY, May 22.

Mine workers at a large New South Wales colliery struck to-day because the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has issued summonses against two wheelers for allegedly ill-using pit horses. The men may not resume until the cases are dealt with, ppssibly in a fortnight’s time. The mine produces 1200 tons of coal a day. Seven collieries are idle in the State to-day, the total loss of coal being 8200 tons, the heaviest for any single day since V-E Day. Following unauthorised V-E stoppages, an appeal by the miners’ leaders to the men for ail-out production to shorten the Pacific- war had cut the strike losses drastically.
