RIDDLED WITH BULLETS
HEAD OF FASCIST POLICE FOUND IN ITALIAN MOUNTAINS (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) NEW YORK May 21. Major Mario Caritas, head of the Fascist secret police, described as Italy’s public enemy No. 1 was shot dead in a mountain hideout by American troops who had been trailing him for weeks. The Americans burst into a bedroom, where they found Caritas and his mistress, Emelia Chianni. aged 29. Caritas acknowledged his identity and then snatched a pistol from under a pillow. Shooting wildly, he wounded two soldiers and his mistress, and then fell dead riddled with tommy-gun bullets Caritas was head of the Fascist militia at the time of Italy’s surrender. He volunteered for service with the Germans and was placed in charge of the German-spon-sored S.S. force. In that role he followed a career of torture, looting and wurder.
