SCIENTIFIC DISTINCTION
OTAGO GRADUATE HONOURED The distinction of being elected a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand at the early age of 33 years has been gained by Dr Colin O. Hutton, formerly of Dunedin, who has had a brilliant scholastic career. A son of Mrs J. A. Hutton, of Roslyn, Dr Hutton attended John McGlashan College and Otago University. He graduated B.Sc. and M.Sc.’ in New Zealand and then was awarded the first Shirtcliffe scholarship, which enabled him to proceed to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he graduated Ph.D. in petrology. During his university career he won the Sir George Grey scholarship, the von Haast Prize, a research scholarship in geology, the Duff us Lubecki research scholarship, the Emmanuel College research studentship, and the Hamilton award. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of London, and recently became the only fellow in Australia or New Zealand of the Mineralogical Society of America. About five years ago Dr Hutton joined the New Zealand Geological Survey as petrologist.
