FLOWN ONCE AGAIN

KINGSFORD, SMITH’S PLANECANBERRA', May 22. After a test flight the historic monoplane Southern Cross, which has been overhauled and repaired, has been, granted a certificate of airworthiness. It will be used in the Australian-made film of the life of the late- Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. Piloted by Wing Commander Harry Purvis, engineer for Sir Charles on some of his famous flights, with a nephew of Sir Charles, Wing Commander John Kingsford Smith, as co-pilot, the Southern Cross yesterday made its first flight in 10 years. , ~ R.A.A.F. mechanics made the overhaul. “I think the old bus is running better than ever, despite'the passage of years,” said Wing Commander Purvis. “ I am very proud and happy to have flown her once again. I could almost feel the shade of ‘ Smithy ’ standing in front of me.”
